Acne is a common condition that affects almost 80% of the population. While most people get over their acne phase without any permanent marks, it can leave behind some nasty scars for some people.
The good news is, there are plenty of skincare products that can help you get rid of acne scars. The bad news? Not all of them will work for your skin type. So more than treatment, to prevent them is still the best thing you can do to win your battle against acne scars.
What causes acne scars?
In order to effectively prevent acne scars, we first need to know what causes them.
Acne scars are caused by inflammation from a pimple, papule, or cyst. As soon as the pore swells and fills with bacteria, dead skin cells, or excess oils, it starts damaging the follicle wall. The infection destroys healthy skin cells, resulting in an acne lesion.
As an acne lesion starts to heal, it leaves behind a hyper pigmented mark on the skin. This by itself isn’t alarming because this is just part of the skin’s healing process. Superficial acne marks will have completely disappeared after the 6th month. Whatever doesn’t heal after a year are acne scars.
How do you prevent acne scars?
Keep your pores clean
The problem starts when pores start to get inflamed. Wash your face with a cleanser that’s suited to your skin type. If you wear makeup regularly, start double-cleansing.
Avoid picking scabs
You might think that by picking scabs, you’re helping your skin heal. The truth is, you’re only going to make it worse. Scabs are the skin’s way of protecting your wounds from external harm so picking them will only result in scarring.
See a dermatologist
Everyone should visit a dermatologist at least once in their lives. If you’re prone to getting large pimples and bad breakouts, a dermatologist is the only person who can recommend products that will treat your skin problems.
